World governing body wants Kenyan marathon runner's two-year ban increased to four years

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) requesting that Rita Jeptoo's two-year doping ban be doubled.

On Tuesday the CAS released a statement advising how the world governing body wants the Kenyan marathon runner's period of ineligibility to be increased to four years due to "aggravating circumstances".

Jeptoo failed an out-of-competition doping test last September, which led to the postponement of the awards ceremony for the 2013-14 World Marathon Majors (WMM) series. Jeptoo had been due to collect the women’s series prize, including a cheque for $500,000, after having secured her WMM series victory with a win in Chicago, which took place on October 12, after the out-of-competition test.

Jeptoo has also filed an appeal at the CAS. The CAS statement read: "In her appeal to the CAS, Ms Jeptoo requests that the challenged decision be set aside and that the two-year suspension be lifted."

The statement continued: "With her appeal, Ms Jeptoo filed an application to stay the execution of the challenged decision. Ms Jeptoo requests this stay in order to be able to resume training and to be able to participate in IAAF competitions during the CAS proceedings."
