European under-23 champion betters 31-year-old record with 77.55m at Folksam Grand Prix

After winning European under-23 hammer gold in Tallinn earlier this month, Nick Miller had said: "The goal in the future now is to break the British record."

The 22-year-old Commonwealth silver medallist didn't waste much time and in Karlstad on Wednesday (July 22), with his first competitive throw since his European under-23 title, the British senior champion launched the hammer out to 77.55m to add one centimetre to the record mark set by Martin Girvan 31 years ago.

Following his record-breaking first round throw, which improved his PB of 76.97m set in May that had placed him fourth on the UK all-time list, Miller went on to foul his next two throws before recording marks of 75.46m and 75.03m and then a final foul.

Miller's 77.55m had also seemed enough to beat 80.71m-man Dilshod Nazarov in Sweden as the Briton led with one round to go, but Nazarov saved his best throw until last and claimed victory with 77.95m. Miller's fellow Briton Mark Dry finished sixth with 74.26m.
