British Athletics will not be sending a team to the last ever edition of the event in Nairobi

There will be no British team at the IAAF World U18 Championships next summer after British Athletics confirmed it would not be sending athletes to the event.

The event, formerly known as the World Youth Championships, is to be held in Nairobi in Kenya from July 12-16 next year.

It is set to be the last ever edition of the event following an announcement by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) president Seb Coe earlier this year confirming that driving regional competitions would be the new focus.

"We decided it's not the best pathway for those athletes at that stage of their career," Coe said during a press conference at the Rio Olympic Games.

A statement from British Athletics read in part: "With events such as the newly-launched European Youth Championships in Tbilisi in 2016, opportunities at area-level competition for the youth age group are being further developed and British athletes will now focus their energies on qualifying for the Commonwealth Youth Games being staged in Nassau, Bahamas 19-23 July 2017 as part of their respective home country teams."
