Fast times predicted on new course at Ipswich Waterfront

Gemma Steel and Adam Hickey are among the entries for the Ipswich Building Society Twilight 5km on Saturday (May 12).

The event has moved from August to May and from a Friday to a Saturday evening in a bid to attract a higher quality field, while the course is now on Ipswich Waterfront.

National Cross champion Hickey races England 5km champion Richard Allen, plus John Beattie, Jack Gray and Nick Goolab as they chase Chris Thompson’s course record of 14:05.

Hickey's 5km best is 14:19, clocked when finishing runner-up at the event in 2016.

Steel, meanwhile, has a 5km PB of 16:00 and is joined by Iona Lake, Faye Fullerton, Louise Small, Elle Baker and Charlotte Christensen with Emelia Gorecka’s course record of 15:40 a target.

"The new course removes many of the turns and elevation that runners experienced on the previous route," said race director Carl Ashton.

"Moving the race down to Ipswich Waterfront has allowed us to add 5km waves for all abilities and a family run all leading up to the main event at 7pm to create an afternoon of athletics on the waterfront."

Thompson set his course record in 2016, while Gorecka's mark was run in 2017.

Events
