WARHOLM BREAKS EUROPEAN RECORD
Karsten Warholm came mightily close to breaking Kevin Young’s 28-year-old world record of 46.78 when he smashed his European record with a scintillating 46.87.
As usual, running in lane eight the Norwegian built up a huge lead – he won by well over two seconds – and he just clipped the final hurdle to lose a little momentum.
It strengthens his hold on the number two spot behind the American’s time set in the Barcelona Olympics.
For good measure he also won the 400m 90 minutes later in 45.05 for the best ever one-day one-lap double.
Another world lead went the way of Laura Muir in the 1500m.
The early pace of 64.07 and 2:09.08 for the first two laps did not hint at something that fast but Muir took off just before the bell and a 59.86 last lap gave her a clear victory over fellow Brits Laura Weightman and Melissa Courtney-Bryant, who ran 4:01.62 and a PB 4:01.81 respectively as Hellen Obiri could only finish 11th.after being second at the bell.
Other British wins were scored by Jemma Reekie – courtesy of a 29 last 200m at 800m, pole vaulter Holly Bradshaw who cleared 4.69m at the third attempt and Adam Gemili in the 200m.
Timothy Cheruiyot proved too strong for Jakob Ingebrigtsen at 1500m and Donavan Brazier again impressed at 800m which he won in 1:43.76.
There were more top quality victories for the Swedish pairing of Armand Duplantis and Daniel Stahl who won with 6.01m and 69.17m efforts respectively in the vault and discus.
In the women’s high jump, Yaroslava Mahuchikh avenged her loss to compatriot Yuliya Levchenko from earlier in the week with a third attempt clearance at 2.00 to equal the world outdoor lead.
