The six newly-elected representatives of the IAAF Athletes' Commission have been confirmed, with Valerie Adams to be joined by Mutaz Essa Barshim, Yelena Isinbayeva, Koji Murofushi, Christian Olsson and Andreas Thorkildsen.

Two-time Olympic and four-time world shot put champion Adams (pictured above with world pole vault record-holder Renaud Lavillenie and the now IAAF president Seb Coe) tweeted that she was "grateful" to be elected and added: "Looking forward to help make our sport and especially throws progress further."

To have been eligible for nomination, athletes must have participated in at least one of the past two editions of the IAAF World Championships, in the most recent Olympic Games or be a competitor at this year's World Championships.

All athletes accredited for the World Championships in Beijing had the right to vote in the elections.

"Athletes are a vital pillar in sports and should remain at the heart of the decision-making process in all sport governing bodies," Frank Fredericks, chairman of the IAAF Athletes' Commission, had said ahead of the vote.

"I have seen how the Athletes' Commission has not only acted as a voice for athletes, but helped to provide improved opportunities to athletes. It is our sincere hope that the new team builds on the foundation that has been set by the current and past members."

The total number of votes cast was 1310, with 1267 of those valid. Ballots were rejected if more or less than six candidates from the 16 nominees were selected.

Adams received the highest number of votes with 834.
