Strong start to 2019 by McColgan in Doha, while Hawkins and Jenny Nesbitt prove form in Valencia

Ooredoo Doha 10k, January 11

Eilish McColgan ran a PB of 31:51 to win the women's race, improving on the times of 31:56 and 31:53 she has clocked at the last two editions of the event.

Those times in 2017 and 2018 ended up leading each year's British rankings.

McColgan placed 10th overall, with Egypt’s Babker Abdo Koudi winning the men’s race in 30:30.

Kenya's Collins Kiptarus Chebii (2:24:17) and Nancy Rotich (2:43:30) won the marathon, while the half-marathon was won by Bernard Korir (63:41) and Norah Chebet (75:11).

10K Valencia Ibercaja, Spain, January 13

Tsehay Gemechu broke the Ethiopian 10km record with 30:15, taking 15 seconds off Tirunesh Dibaba’s previous record mark.

Gemechu improved the course record by 44 seconds with her impressive time, while her compatriot Chala Ketema Regasa also smashed the course record in the men's race with 27:23.

Uganda's Stephen Kissa was second in 27:24 and Kenya's Vedic Cheruiyot third in 27:26, while Britain's Callum Hawkins ran 28:55 to finish as the second European athlete and 19th overall.

That time is an official 10km PB by Hawkins, though he has run faster 10km splits as part of a half-marathon.

Spain’s 1995 world marathon champion Martín Fiz set a world M55 best with his time of 31:36, improving the previous mark by 27 seconds.

In the women's race, Kenya's Gloria Kite was second in 30:26 and Evaline Chirchir third in 30:43, while Trihas Gebre set a Spanish record of 31:39 which placed her eighth.

Britain's Jenny Nesbitt ran a PB of 33:10 to finish 11th and the third European athlete.

Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza, Elgoibar, Spain, January 13

Kenya's world under-20 10,000m champion Rhonex Kipruto and world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri won the senior races, clocking 32:04 (10.7km) and 24:39 (6.6km) respectively.

Men's runner-up was Ethiopia's Selemon Barega (32:25) ahead of Kenya's Stanley Waithaka (32:52), while Uganda's Stella Chesang (24:59) was second in the women's race and Kenya's world 3000m steeplechase record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech third (25:16).

Britain's Kate Holt finished fifth and Lily Partridge sixth, Ireland's Sara Treacy seventh, Britain's Rachel Robinson eighth, Nicole Taylor 13th and Naomi Taschimowitz 14th.

Britain's Mahamed Mahamed secured a 12th-place finish in the men's race, while Jack Millar was 14th, Adam Hickey 24th and Corey De’Ath 31st.

In the age group races, Zakariya Mahamed and Euan Brennan placed first and second in the men's under-20 event, with Rory Leonard fifth and Joshua Cowperthwaite 14th, while Amelia Samuels and Holly Page claimed the top two spots in the women’s under-20 race, with Shannon Flockhart fourth and Olivia Mason 10th.

LSAC Indoor Open Meeting, Loughborough, January 12

Shot putter Lewis Byng recorded his first 18m throw with a 6kg shot, his 18.03m being a British indoor age-17 best.

European 400m hurdles bronze medallist Meghan Beesley ran two 60m PBs with 7.52 and 7.51.

Arkansas Invitational, Fayetteville, USA, January 11

Britain's Chris O'Hare opened 2019 with a winning 3:57.97 mile.

Northern Championships, Sheffield, January 12

Lucy Hadaway won the long jump with 6.23m to break the championships best of Katarina Johnson-Thompson, while Naomi Ogbeta won the triple jump with 13.49m.

English under-17 triple jump champion Archie Yeo won his speciality with a 14.10m leap but also the long jump with a huge 7.33m PB to move to second on the UK all-time under-17 list.

Andrew Robertson won the 60m in 6.68, while Adam Hague claimed his fourth pole vault win with a 5.40m clearance.

FPSG Scottish National Open, Glasgow, January 12

World indoor medallist Eilidh Doyle raced her first 400m of the year, clocking 53.38, while Jemma Reekie ran an indoor 800m PB of 2:03.06 to move to fifth on the Scottish all-time rankings indoors.

Sol Sweeney ran 3:45.04 for 1500m, while there were high jump clearances of 1.77m for Nikki Manson and 2.17m for Allan Smith.
