Double Olympic, world and European track champion to lead the 10-strong Great Britain team taking on 13.1 miles in Cardiff

Mo Farah has been named as captain of the British team for the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships on Saturday (March 26).

The double Olympic, world and European track champion, who is competing at these championships for the first time, will headline a 10-strong team taking on the 13.1 mile course.

He is the British and European record holder over the distance, having posted a time of 59:32 last year.

Farah has also run 59:22 for 13.1 miles when winning last year’s Great North Run, but his time from Lisbon remains the European best because of the extent of the downhill gradient over the Newcastle to South Shields course.

On being named team captain, Farah said: "I am honoured to be selected as captain of the British team for the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships.

"I have had some great experiences in the sport throughout my career and I am proud to represent my country in this way on Saturday."

Team leader Spencer Duval said on the appointment: "Mo is one of the most outstanding athletes this country has ever seen.

"His great achievements will be inspirational to the rest of the team heading into this special home championships."
