London Marathon Charitable Trust awards £4.8 million in grants

Athletics facilities are among those set to receive funding from the London Marathon Charitable Trust as part of £4.8 million in grants announced on Tuesday.

Grants totalling £3,470,113 have been made to a record 70 organisations in the areas in which The London Marathon Ltd organised events in 2014, while an additional £1,150,000 was allocated by the Trustees to Olympic Legacy projects and £200,000 to the London Marathon Playing Fields and Major Projects fund.

The Holland Sports Athletics Club, Perivale Park, Mayfield Athletics Club and Linford Christie Stadium are among the projects receiving support.

Holland Sports AC has been allocated £25,000 for track resurfacing and the creation of a landing area for discus and shot, while there is £100,000 for improvements to the track, pole vault and throwing area at Perivale Park.

Mayfield AC receives £16,500 for refurbishment of changing rooms, while Thames Valley Harriers has been handed £95,000 for the cost of resurfacing the track and the installation of lighting in covered areas at the Linford Christie Stadium.

"One of the six objectives set by the founders of the London Marathon in 1981 was to raise money for the provision of recreational facilities and this is the largest number of grants we have allocated in our thirty-five year history," said Sarah Ridley, chief grants officer for the Trust.

"We know how challenging it is to get funding for facilities and our aim is to support organisations that have a good track record in encouraging more people to become physically active."

The Trust has now allocated more than £56.4 million in grants to more than 1000 organisations in London, Surrey, Silverstone, Birmingham and Liverpool.

Full details of the 70 organisations awarded grants can be found here.
