A look back at the women's 3000m steeplechase at the IAAF World Championships

In the first world steeplechase final, in Helsinki in 2005, a front-running effort by Dorcus Inzikuru gave her victory and Uganda’s first world title.

Silver medallist Yekaterina Volkova returned in Osaka in 2007 and gained a clear win in 9:06.57 as fellow Russian and world record-holder Gulnara Galkina was a disappointing seventh. Galkina would historically break nine minutes in the following year’s Beijing Olympics.

Galkina led for much of the Berlin 2009 race but faded to fourth in a race won by Spain’s Marta Dominguez from Yuliya Zarudneva. The latter, running under her married name of Zaripova, front-ran a winning 9:07.03 in Daegu in 2011, although she was subsequently among the wave of Russian athletes banned for anti-doping irregularities.

Milcah Chemos, who was third in both 2009 and 2011, proved too strong for fellow Kenyan Lidya Chepkurui in Moscow 2013.

For the second successive championships, there was a lowly placed British finalist with Eilish McColgan achieving the best British result so far.
