The Beijing 2008 Jamaican 4x100m relay team, which included Usain Bolt, will not regain their Olympic gold medals following Carter's positive test

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed the appeal filed by Nesta Carter against the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to disqualify him from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

As a result, Jamaica's Beijing 2008 4x100m relay team – which also included Usain Bolt – will not regain the Olympic gold medals they had been stripped of following Carter's positive test.

The now-retired Bolt had seemingly completed an Olympic ‘triple triple’ in Rio in 2016 as he added gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m to titles in those events claimed at both Beijing 2008 and London 2012. But in January 2017 the IOC announced the disqualification of the Jamaican team from the men’s sprint relay event in Beijing after reanalysis of Carter’s samples from the 2008 Games resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance methylhexaneamine.

Methylhexaneamine was added by name to the World Anti-Doping Agency banned list in 2010, but before that it was considered to be a non-specified prohibited substance.

Carter filed an appeal at the CAS in February last year but on Thursday (May 31) it was announced that the appeal had been dismissed, following an arbitration procedure conducted by a CAS panel composed of Mr Ken Lalo (Israel), President, Prof. Philippe Sands QC (United Kingdom) and Prof. Massimo Coccia (Italy).

"The panel concluded that the reanalysis of Nesta Carter’s sample collected following the race at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games confirmed the presence of methylhexaneamine (MHA) and that it could not accept any of the arguments raised by Nesta Carter contending that the test results should be ignored or the IOC DP (International Olympic Committee Disciplinary Panel) decision should otherwise be overturned for certain alleged failures," read a CAS media release in part.

"Finally, the CAS panel noted that this case was strictly limited to the consequences related to the Beijing Games and issues linked with fault or negligence are not relevant since sanctions such as ineligibility or disqualification from other events were not at stake here.

"Accordingly, the CAS panel dismissed the appeal and the decision issued on 25 January 2017 by the IOC DP is confirmed."

Carter ran the opening leg of the men’s 4x100m final which saw the Jamaican team – also featuring Michael Frater, Bolt and Asafa Powell – clock a then world-record time of 37.10 to take the 2008 Olympic title ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, Japan and Brazil.

The 31-year-old also formed part of Jamaica’s gold medal-winning sprint relay teams at the London 2012 Olympics and the 2011, 2013 and 2015 World Championships. He won world indoor 60m silver in 2012 and 100m bronze at the World Championships in Moscow in 2013.
