Sprint doubles for Lemaitre and Reus at national champs - global update
Christophe Lemaitre completed a sprint double at the French Indoor Championships, showing good form in the 200m in a world-lead of 20.43 ahead of Mickael-Meba Zeze in a 20.54 PB after winning the 60m title in 6.64.
One week after a 7.12 PB over 60m, Stella Akakpo won the women’s 200m final on her 22nd birthday in a 23.27 PB while Marie Gayot won the 400m in 52.81.
Performance of the day was Pascal Martinot Lagarde’s win in the 60m hurdles in a season’s best of 7.47 but the showdown with Dimitri Bascou didn’t materialise as he was a DNS due to hamstring pain.
Veteran Vanessa Boslak won the pole vault with 4.60m - her best in four years - before trying at a French record 4.72m. Third was Swedish world youth all-time best holder Lisa Gunnarsson with 4.30m.
Teddy Tamgho made a successful comeback in the triple jump, winning with his fourth round jump of 16.98m ahead of Harold Correa (16.91m) and European champion Benjamin Compaore (16.88m). Ireland’s Robert Heffernan won the 5000m walk in 19:40.21.
An excellent long jump by Kafetien Gomis of 8.23m put him ahead of Rahau Mahiau with 7.99m. Jeremy Lelievre scored 5965 in the heptathlon and Sudanese Mohamed Idris cleared 2.25m to win the high jump.
Julian Reus also completed a sprint double at the German Indoor Championships, winning the 200m title in 20.55 less than 24 hours after winning the 60m in a German record of 6.52.
Rebekka Haase finished second in the 60m to Tatjana Pinto but won her third successive indoor title over 200m in a PB of 23.10 ahead of 19-year-old Lisa Mayer in a 23.30 PB.
Good marks came in the jumps with Alexandra Wester confirming her good form with victory in the long jump with 6.75m while Max Hess improved his triple jump PB from 16.55m to 17.00m to move to second on the world rankings, excluding Russian marks. Mateusz Przybylko and Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch cleared 2.29m and 1.95m respectively to win the high jump titles while Carlo Paech won the pole vault with 5.60m after Raphael Holzdeppe withdrew due to a twisted ankle.
Pick of the distance action was the women’s 3000m: Konstanze Klosterhalfen 8:56.36 and Alina Reh 9:00.58, both under the European indoor junior record. Christina Hering also took a gun-to-tape win in the 800m in 2:02.48. The 400m titles were won by Eric Kruger (47.11) and Lara Hoffmann (53.41).
Jan Kudlicka cleared the Portland standard of 5.77m in the pole vault and highlighted the second day of the Czech Indoor Champs. In the new Ostrava Hall he also tried at new national record height of 5.83m.
Tomas Stanek returned from injury in the shot put with a meet record 20.90m. World indoor champion Pavel Maslak confirmed very good shape with a 20.78 200m win. The 400m hurdles world champion Zuzana Hejnova won the 400m in a fast 52.34 but is not going to Portland. The same goes for junior talent Michaela Hruba who after clearing 1.93m tried at the world junior indoor record height of 1.98m.
Marcus Lawler posted 20.96 for 200m at the Irish Champs, while Ben Reynolds started the season with 7.73 in the 60m hurdles and Mark English won tactical 800m in 1:51.57. In the women's race Ciara Mageean clocked 2:03.76. Phil Healy won the 200m in 23.75.
The Golden Fly Series moved for the first time outside of Europe and was staged in Olympic city Rio de Janeiro.
In 42 degrees heat, Germany's Paralympic champion Markus Rehm won the long jump with 8.24m (also a Golden Fly Series record) ahead of home world indoor champion Mauro Vinicius da Silva with 8.14m and Uruguay record holder Emiliano Lasa with 8.03m.
In the women's long jump there was a US win for Funmi Jimoh with 6.63m.
In the pole vault Argentinian German Chiaraviglio cleared 5.50m to win over Augusto Dutra's 5.30m.
There was another series record in the women's pole vault as world champion Fabiana Murer pleased the crowd with 4.63m ahead of US duo Demi Payne and Katie Nageotte, both with 4.43m.
Kenyan runners filled the top five places at the World’s Best 10K in San Juan on Sunday morning.
In a tight finish, Bedan Karoki won in 27:42 in a sprint finish ahead of Leonard Barsoton who was credited with the same time. Stephen Sambu (27:48), Philip Langat (28:00) and John Mwangangi (28:00) completed the top five with Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris a distant sixth in 28:19.
Kenyan runners also filled four of the top five spots in the women’s race: Mary Wacera claimed the title in 31:49 ahead of Ethiopia’s Belaynesh Oljira (31:51) followed by Veronica Nyaruai (31:55), Linet Masai (31:56) and Monicah Wanjiku (31:58). Canada won the inaugural NACAC Cup.
