A look ahead to Sunday's 26.2-mile race

Shadrack Tanui leads the entries for this weekend’s ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon.

The Kenyan has a PB of 2:10:39 from the Seville Marathon last year and is keen to break 2:10 in Manchester on Sunday.

The 31-year-old has been training hard, is in good shape and is following in the footsteps of his brother, Emmanuel Mutai, the 2011 London Marathon winner and 2:03:13 runner.

Ahead of the April 8 race, the Kenyan, who also sometimes goes by the name of Kipkosgei, said: “I am really looking forward to coming to the UK for the first time to compete in the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon.

“I have heard the course is easy to follow and the Manchester support around Trafford is great. I am hoping to run my best time.”

The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon, taking place in Trafford, is building up to be one of the top road races in the UK in 2018 with a fast course and friendly supporters.

Additionally, the Marathon organisers, Xtra Mile, have introduced a time bonus scheme to encourage UK runners to complete the event in their best time possible.

The leading man under 2:10 and female under 2:26 will be awarded a £10,000 cash prize. Then, for a male under 2:15 and female under 2:32, there is a £3000 cash prize.

Finally, all males that complete the marathon under 2:20 and all females under 2:38 will receive £500 as a cash bonus prize.

The race will be streamed on the Manchester Evening News website.
