Three athletes have been selected to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the European Marathon Cup in August, following the official trial at the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday.
John Gilbert, Andi Jones and Ben Moreau will travel to Zurich for the event which is included in the European Athletics Championships, held in the Swiss city from August 12-17, and involves teams of up to five with three to score.
Kent AC's Gilbert secured his place on the team with a 2:16.46 personal best in London, a mark almost a minute quicker than his previous best to cross the line as fourth Brit.
Following news of his selection, Gilbert tweeted: "Over the moon to have been selected alongside @roadrunneraj and @Ben_Moreau for the European Championships Marathon in Zurich in August."
Moreau finished 64th at the recent IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen and placed 11th and 24th over the marathon distance at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships respectively in 2010.
Joining them in Switzerland is Jones who clocked 2:16.55 to win the Greater Manchester Marathon earlier this month.
Nick Torry, who had the 'individual' standard of 2:15:30, is hoping for England Commonwealth selection. Up to five athletes could have been selected if they had met the 'team' mark of 2:17:00 for male athletes.
A further GB & NI team announcement for the European Championships will be made on July 15 following the Sainsbury’s British Championships.
