Here’s our pick of the leading athletes in action on Saturday on Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside and Stockton-on-Tees

The 10th edition of the Great North CityGames features a range of events from 100m to 500m and the mile, sprint hurdles, long jump and pole vault, but here are five key events to look out for.

» Laura Muir – the European champion and Diamond League trophy winner takes on Eilish McColgan, Jemma Reekie, Katie Snowden, Susan Krumins and others in an elite mile race in Stockton-on-Tees on Saturday morning.

If the pace is fast then Laura Weightman’s British mile road record of 4:17.6, set in New York last year, could be a target.

"I've raced at the CityGames before but this will be the first time I'll have ran in Stockton-on-Tees, so it'll be something different," said Muir.

"I love racing in new places, the competition is always fierce and it should be a great event."

» Greg Rutherford – long jump legend takes to the runway for one final meeting as he enjoys his last-ever competition in a mixed contest with athletes like Jazmin Sawyers and Abigail Irozuru.

"I have had some time now to prepare for this upcoming moment, but just thinking about the fact it will be my very last competition ever gives me chills," said the Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth gold medallist.

"No doubt it will be an emotional experience and I want to enjoy it with everyone showing up on the day."

» Reece Prescod – the Briton ran 9.94 for 100m this month and on the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside he races Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and Leon Reid over 150m.

» Jonnie Peacock – the Paralympic champion has a tough test in the T44 100m against recent European para-athletics champion Felix Streng of Germany plus Emanuele Di Marino of Italy and Michail Seitis of Greece.

» Holly Bradshaw – the European bronze medallist leads the women’s pole vault field and the Briton will have Yarisley Silva’s CityGames record of 4.65m in her sights of conditions are good.

» Elite mile races in Stockton start 9.30am on Saturday with the CityGames action on Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside from 12.15pm (BBC coverage is live from 1.15pm). See the September 13 issue of AW for full reports, results and photographs from the Simplyhealth Great North Run weekend
