We focus on the men's 220yds/200m as we look back at previous editions of the Commonwealth Games

The first Commonwealth victor was England’s Stan Engelhart. Last in the 100 yards, he won in 21.8. No other times were recorded, not even that of the other medallists!

In 1934, Arthur Sweeney completed a sprint double in 21.9 and then fellow Englishman Cyril Holmes did likewise with a 21.2 win as Australians John Mumford and Ted Best also repeated their 100 yards medal.

In 1970 Don Quarrie completed a sprint double in winning in 20.56 and then repeated the trick in 1974 with an easy 20.73 victory. He attempted a third sprint double but after winning the 100m and his quarter final in 20.66, he only ran 21.49 for fifth in his semi and the final was won by Scotland’s Allan Wells in a windy 20.12. In 1982 Wells shared gold with England’s Mike McFarlane as both ran 20.43 in an epic race.

Canada’s Atlee Mahorn won the title in 1986 in 20.31 with Todd Bennett, who died last year, second in 20.54 and 100m champion Ben Johnson third in 20.66. The 1990 race produced the highlight of Marcus Adam’s career and English 200m sprinting as he led John Regis and Ade Mafe to a clean sweep. In 1994 Frankie Fredericks was at his peak and he won in 19.97, almost three metres up on Regis. The 1998 race saw a second British clean sweep, though Wales split the English one and three. Julian Golding had the race of his life to win in 20.18, a metre up on Christian Malcolm and Regis, who won his third successive medal.

In 2010 Leon Baptiste (pictured) had his moment of glory, narrowly winning in 20.45 from Lansford Spence of Jamaica with Malcolm close by in third.
