Run Aintree Half Marathon, 10km & 5km, Liverpool
The 10km was the most keenly contested distance and it wound up with Chris Williams getting the better of top master Andy Norman with 31:07, Martin Duff reports.
Leanne Jones was the best of the women on the course around the famous race track with 36:31 as Sophie Wood was the fastest of the women over the half-marathon distance with 78:17, just one second outside her best though without a UKA permit the event would have not counted for ranking purposes.

PB 5km, Haywards Heath (men)
Because of 15mph-plus winds on the predominantly flat exposed Showground, the race maybe did not quite live up to its name but there were two competitive cracking races and 70 of those that broke 17 minutes did achieve lifetime bests even if conditions weren’t perfect.
Most competitors also got well over 5km on their measurements but that was probably due to the 20 plus tight corners in the race and runners having to take a wider line than measured on the very wet and slippery bends.
British Championships 1500m finalist Ian Crowe-Wright used his speed to slip past Joe Wigfield in the last 20 metres to win in 14:23 (pictured, photo by Mark Shearman).
Surprisingly it was his first ever listed 5km on the road. Fellow 1500m star Wigfield (3:40.85 PB) was also effectively debuting as his pre-race best was just 16:09.
Robbie Fitzgibbon was also in contention throughout and he made it a hat-trick of metric milers and the 3:36.97 man who did have a proper PB (14:15) but here could only run 14:29.
Henry McLuckie, himself a 3:42.16 performer, was first under-20 in fourth in 14:30 but well down on his 14:13 PB set in better conditions.
English National and UK Inter-Counties cross-country champion Lewis Sullivan was first under-17 in his debut in 15:05.
English Schools cross-country champion Benjamin Peck also debuted and a first under-15 in 15:57.

Overall:

PB 5km, Haywards Heath (women)
The all women’s race also went to the wire with Izzy Fry just edging Beth Kidger (Fry on right in Mark Shearman’s photo) with both getting times of 16:24.
English National under-20 runner-up Fry had run a 16:06 (and 16:02.00 on the track) with British Championships 1500m finalist Kidger closer to her lifetime best of 16:18.
Hannah Irwin was third in 16:39 and Holly Dixon fourth in 16:50 but both were well short of their bests as generally the women found it much harder to run fast times than the men who with much smaller timespans covering each wave that set off were able to run in much larger groups.
Harriet Bloor was first under-20 in her 5km race debut in 17:00.
Clare Elms, the first woman athlete aged over 40, was denied a age group lead a few days earlier due to a missing permit, did achieve a W55 2020 best with 18:18 in her third race in a week though was over 20 seconds down on her Wednesday time.
The 2003 AAA women’s 10km champion Caroline Hoyte, who is new to the W50 age group, set off at close to UK record pace but slowed and dropped out just after halfway.

Romney Marsh 10km, New Romney
Ed Bovingdon took a minute off his year-old PB to win in a respectable 31:03.
The 32 year-old repelled the challenge of 18-year-old Charlie Brisley, who was a former South of England under-15 cross-country champion and he finished 10 seconds back.
Third was the even younger Louis Small who himself won the same title as Brisley in 2019.
The 16-year-old set a 19 second PB of 31:27.
Verity Hopkins set a remarkable four and a half minute PB and her 37:17 time is at a significantly faster pace than any listed 5km (18:58) she has achieved.
The most interesting veteran performance came from Jon Wigley.
The former Athletics Weekly staff member and IAAF man was a former international over 25 laps and his M70 debut came exactly 45 years after he set a 10,000m PB of 28:35.74 in finishing seventh in that year’s AAA Championships.
His time may have been 16 minutes slower but it won him his M70 age group by seven minutes.
