Jake Meyburgh runs 8:19.46 for 3000m aged 14
Jake Meyburgh of Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow ran an impressive 8:19.46 at the British Milers' Club Millfield PB Classic.
Initially thought to be a world age best for a 14-year-old, he is just four seconds slower than the 8:15.02 set by Mo Ali of Ealing, Southall & Middlesex at Wimbledon in 2018.
After running 8:24.30 in Watford a few days earlier, Meyburgh was running in the A race at an event that is primarily geared toward giving young athletes fast racing opportunities – and he won by eight seconds from a number of older athletes.
Earlier this year Meyburgh won the English Schools and SIAB Schools International cross-country titles and will be going for gold in July at the English Schools Track & Field Championships.

In torrential rain, it was Scott Armstrong who battled the elements best to win the Jimmy Hedley Memorial 800m in 1:56.16, while in third there was a personal best for under-17 Magnus Riddell with 1:58.04, Martin Duff reports.
In the C race, the best of the women was under-20 Lois Creasey in 2:13.91, for fifth place in a mixed race.
Elsewhere and later in the evening, under-20 Brandon Pye posted a personal best 3000m victory in 8:19.75 despite the weather.

Middlesborough’s Mandale AC collected both the men’s and women’s titles, with the men breaking their own course record as Stewart Park played host, Martin Duff reports.
For the women and on the opening lap, Phillipa Stone, who was second last and then fourth this, year in the Northern Championships, equalled her own individual lap record with 4:50 for the testing one-mile lap with its uphill finish.
In the men’s competition, the quickest time was also on stage one, as Max Creasey ran 4:25, albeit 11 seconds down on Marc Scott’s record for the lap.

Zak Houghton was first home in 15:15 but in third and fifth spots were two of Lincoln Wellington’s top distance runners Abbie Donnelly and Sophie Wallis, Martin Duff reports.
Both were inside 32 minutes in the Night of 10,000 PBs at Parliament Hill earlier in May with lifetime bests and here, were close again, with Donnelly home in 15:28.
Wallis bettered her previous best 5km time by five seconds with 15:44.
