BRITISH MASTERS 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS, Mallory Park, Leicestershire, April 3
In a move not welcomed by very many runners, British Masters organisers decided to hold their 10-mile championships not only in conjunction with the Anglo Celtic Plate ultra competition but also with their own road relay programme.
Predictably entries were among one the lowest ever for the event but also some who entered and paid their fees gave the event a miss as they thought that competition would be weak. Just 73 runners finished over all of the age ranges.
In the event, the overall men’s masters title went to Ben Kruze, in 55:18, after breaking away firstly from M35 Tom Shardlow and then Dan Morgan later, after the half-way point.

In fifth overall, Northern Masters’ runner James Mackie ran a useful 57:17 to take the M50 title.
One top quality male master who did bother to compete was rock guitarist and multi-championship gold medallist Peter Giles who was the sole M80 runner with an 89:35 clocking.
The women’s section was taken by leading W45 and normally ultra runner Sarah Webster who ran 61:43. After a steady start the Lewes AC runner followed early leader Anna Hollingworth, who went on to finish second and top W40, Amy Anderson and Anne Halton-Hanley before taking the lead just before the half-way point.
The only holder of a British 10-mile age group best on duty was Scarborough’s Sue Haslam who set a new W70 mark earlier this year at 73:06. Here and despite the windy conditions, Haslam ran 73:51.

TED PEPPER MT 10km, Hayes, May 5
While Beckenham’s Pete Baksh easily regained the men’s title in cold and windy conditions he last won in 2021 in 33:01, it was the women’s race that saw the most notable performance.
At the age of 61, Clare Elms became the oldest ever race winner in a time of 39:32 for her eighth victory here since her first in 2007
Over the first half she was content to follow Melody Kane before putting in a sub-six minute mile to go clear and eventually win by 20 seconds and was surprised her time was nearly two minutes quicker than when she won the world masters title on the road in Florida just over a month ago.
The race which was first run in 1979, is held in memory of Ted Pepper, a Blackheath athlete who died in the 1978 Three Peaks race and the inaugural winner was Olympic marathoner Barry Watson.

Twice this year, Chelsea Baker had clocked 16:16 for the distance to establish a double personal best, but here, the Bristol & West Royal Navy servicewoman improved her mark to 16:03, after breaking away from Trish Jackman and Sophie Pikett.
