BIRMINGHAM LEAGUE, Division 1, Match 3, Smethwick, January 11
The division one match at Warley Woods and hosted by Birmingham University, also saw the Midland Women’s League top flight join in the fun and it was Callum Hanlon who came out on top of a close race.
The race went ahead satisfactorily and although there was some snow that caused cancellations elsewhere there were no problems here.
The Leamington runner scored his first ever league win and had got away before the final shoot out for minor places behind. There, it was Loughborough Students’ Brandon Pye, the 2022 English National under-17 champion, who outsprinted half-a-dozen rivals to get the nod over Birmingham University’s Finlay Proffitt, who was second in the previous match.
Further back, Birchfield’s Ed Banks, champion last winter, continued his run as top veteran in the league.

BIRMINGHAM LEAGUE Div 2, Match 3, Holt Heath, Worcestershire, January 11
Hosts Black Pear Joggers used Top Barn Farm for both men’s and Midland women’s second flight matches.
The division has a new secretary and, as in the opening two fixtures, there were no results available.
BIRMINGHAM LEAGUE Div 3, Match 3, Atcham, Telford, Shropshire, January 11
Attingham Park, with its Regency Mansion was brought into action by hosts Telford and Dave Brewis moved up from third last time out to narrowly win from the hosts’ Jack Cole.

CHILTERN LEAGUE, Match 4, Watford, Hertfordshire, January 11
The fourth match was held from Cassiobury Park and after crossing the Grand Union Canal went up the stony track into the woods as a venue that has been used by the league for more than 50 years.
The Luton pair of Jed Noblett and junior Herbie Johnson had things much their own way as third placed Marcus Shantry was nearly a minute down in a repeat of his third spot from the previous match.
Noblett, who ran a useful 14:03.56 for a track 5000m last summer had nearly 100m in hand over Johnson, the English Schools’ 1500m sixth placer,
Whilst Bedford & County retained control of the league overall, it was nearby St Albans who came out overall on top here mainly thanks to their men.
In the senior women’s event, it was Elle Roche who came out on top with her first league win in more than two years, whilst down the age groups there were repeat victories for most of the winners in the girls’ races
For the boys, Chiltern Harriers’ Tom Ford notched up his third win in the under-15 age group.
Number bounced back well after the lower turn out in the December match with much bigger fields and only the under-5 girls slightly down in finishers.

HAMPSHIRE LEAGUE, Match 4, Reading, Berkshire, January 11
With the league having clubs from five different counties, it was Berkshire’s turn to host with its two Reading clubs and Prospect Park, a venue that hosted the South of England championships 56 years ago, was again used.
Back then the league was used as a backdrop for the Michael Crawford film, The Games, and the movie star, who admittedly did get himself fit for the role, just managed to hold off the Southern winner, Tim Johnson, in a staged close finish.
Back to the present and this year, the women’s race saw the hosts’ Jess Gibbon repeat her win from the same match last year and notch up another massive victory after her Oxfordshire title the previous week.
The Euro 12th placer last month now goes into the South of England championships looking to retain her title.
Here, over a bone hard course that did soften a bit and was slippery in places, Gibbon’s winning margin was one of almost two minutes. This was over under-17 Katie Pye, who had won the two previous senior women’s races this winter.
In turn, the Aldershot runner was nearly a minute clear of third placed Jess Corbett as her team also again came out on top.
Pye, the Euro under-28 3000-metres champion, may have placed well in the senior women’s age group but there were only three takers for the actual women’s under-17 event.
There was a much better turn out in the under-15 girls’ race and it was Kitty Scott who took the honours from Aldershot team mate Naomi Walmsley and their club seem destined for major team medals in this age group in the upcoming championships.
Up the age groups, former double London Marathon W45 winner Sarah Gee continues her comeback after 14 years out of the sport and finished inside the top 20 as first over-60. This was despite being on anti-biotics following a hard training and racing few weeks.
The senior men’s event saw victory for Southampton’s Harry Smith gain his first ever league win and it was over the Alderhot pair of junior Matthew Pickering, the Inter-Counties eighth placer and Luke Prior.
There was a repeat under-17 men’s victory for Aldershot’s William Smith.

On a 8100m course in Stanborough Park for the seniors, with two stiff climbs in the woods, Alex Lepretre made light of the tough terrain to come home first, Alastair Aitken reports.
Highgate Harriers go into the final league match on February , ahead of their nearest rivals Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets. They placed their 12 men within the first 48 places at Welwyn.
Junior Herts runner Luke Dunham has now won four Met League races consecutively. From the same club Khahisa Mhlanga burst away from a group to win the women's‘race followed by TV runners Chris Baker and Lisa Stern. London Heathside have crept ahead and look like taking the women's title again.

TRACKSMITH SURREY LEAGUE Div 1, Match 3A, West Horsley Place, Surrey, January 11
The top flight divisions in both the men’s and women’s sections returned to the grade one listed medieval manor house that proved popular last winter as Guildford and Godalming again hosted, Steve Smythe reports.
The venue where the BBC comedy Ghosts is filmed also hosted the South of Thames five-mile race in November.
On a shortened lap from 2023, which in icy conditions saw a number of fallers on the slippery bends, attracted a total of over 700 runners competing in the six races.
Thames Hare and Hounds' second claimer Jack Millar, who won the South West Championships the previous week, was a clear men's winner timing 22:54 for the short five-mile circuit.
Herne Hill's Sam Bramwell, who improved to 13:55.10 at 5000m this summer, had his best ever cross-country run to follow the English National eighth-placer home.
Thames had seven in the first 20 but unfortunately four of those were non scorers and that allowed Hercules Wimbledon to win for the third time and they have a 160-point lead going into the final fixture in February.
Phil Wicks, the 2008 English National runner-up, was first M40.

It was an easy victory as Jones, who followed up her 16:12 5km PB on New Year's Eve had over a minute margin over her challengers on the slippery two lap circuit of the scenic grounds.
Second place went to clubmate Sophie Tooley as Herne Hill won easily on the day but third-placers Belgrave third have a clear lead going into the final fixture.

SURREY LEAGUE, Match 3B, Oxshot Woods, January 11
There were three races for the lower divisions of the league, as the meeting opened with the men’s division 2 fixture, followed by a combined men’s division 3 and 4, then, finally the afternoon ended with a women’s division 2 and 3 race.
Holland Sports’ Jack Kavanagh continued his winning streak in the league, this time by well over a minute from his Holland Sports’ second claim club mate Kieran Barnes as third placed John Campbell, of league leaders Clapham Chasers was a similar distance further down.
The two Holland Sports men wheeled out a new signing in the shape of top veteran Andy Coley--Maud who has switched from Clapham and finished fifth overall, just ahead of another second claimer Lyndon Marshall.
It was plain then that Holland took the team award on the day to move ahead overall and both clubs remain on course to go up to the top flight. This means that former ever-present in Division One, Ranelagh Harriers, are condemned to another season out of the limelight.
In the other men’s race, the combined division three and four outing, it was Matthew Raeside from the other Clapham Club, Pioneers who came out on top
The second flight women’s race, which included their third division was taken by top W40 and former World Triathlon competitor Paula Rutherfoord, whose Ful-on-Tri club dominated,
