World Cross medallists set for Cross de Atapuerca - global update
The three medallists from the World Cross Country Championships will compete in the women’s race at the Cross de Atapuerca on November 13, informs organisers. The previously announced Agnes Tirop will face silver and bronze medallists Senbere Teferi and Netsanet Gudeta along with two-time reigning champion Belaynesh Oljira.
Five-time winner Imane Merga is also confirmed for the men’s race.
Atapuerca will be the first meeting of the 2016-17 IAAF Cross Country Permit series. This year, one more event will be Alcobendas in Spain on November 27. The rest will be in 2017 with San Giorgio su Legnano in Italy (January 6), Antrim in Great Britain (January 14), Sevilla in Spain (January 15), legendary San Vittore Olona (January 22), Albufeira in Portugal (February 5) and Nairobi in Kenya (February 17).
British Olympian Tsegai Tewelde will compete in the Beirut Marathon on November 13, informs organisers.
At the Best Marathon Runner Awards to be held in the birth place of the marathon in Athens on Friday, AIMS will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Haile Gebrselassie.
Eliud Kipchoge and Jemima Sumgong have been named as AIMS’ Best Marathon Runners and will be also awarded.
The Green Award, which is designed to reward best environmental practice in marathon events, will be presented to the GöteborgsVarvet Half Marathon.
The Social Award, which highlights races working towards achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, will be presented to the Munich Marathon.
Former winner Meb Keflezighi will retire from marathon running at next year’s edition of the New York City Marathon.
“So HAPPY to announce that I'll conclude my marathon career at the 2017 @nycmarathon,” he said on Twitter.
Keflezighi also looks set to race the Boston Marathon next April in his farewell season.
Two-time European heptathlon champion Antoinette Nana Djimou has relocated from Paris to Montpellier where she will be coached by Bertrand Valcin and Jean-Yves Cochand, informs L’Equipe.
"Bruno Gajer will also help me with the 800m. It'll do me good to change the setting and see other things. I do not know yet if I'll do the indoor season,” she said.
Her new training group includes Olympic decathlon silver medallist Kevin Mayer.
Kenya’s Hillary Yego will be aiming to regain his Athens Marathon title on November 13, informs organisers.
The line-up also includes Augustine Rono (2:07:23 PB) and Luka Rotich (2:08:12 PB).
Top names in the women’s race include Brighton Marathon winner Peninah Wanjiru and Gladys Kwambai.
