Usain Bolt starts season with 10.05 100m - global update
World record-holder Usain Bolt opened up his 2016 campaign on a winning note, taking the men’s 100m in 10.05 (+0.1) at the 5th Cayman Invitational.
The six-time Olympic gold medallist wasn’t particularly happy with his overall performance, as he wanted to add to his collection of 45 sub-10 second performances, but the Jamaican was satisfied with getting his season off to a winning start.
Bolt's next race is on Friday in Ostrava where he will also contest the 100m.
Dentarius Locke of the US was second in 10.12 and Jamaica's Kemar Bailey-Cole third in 10.18.
USA's world leader Kendra Harrison flashed to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles in 12.42 (+0.1), the second quickest time this year behind her own world-leading mark of 12.36. Canada's Phylicia George was second in 12.74.
The women’s 100m went to American sprinter Jenna Prandini, who clocked 11.16 (-0.2) to beat Kerron Stewart with 11.20 and Carmelita Jeter with 11.34. Prandini returned an hour later to complete the double with 22.63 (+0.7) in the 200m.
The men’s 400m was impressively won by Trinidad and Tobago 2014 world junior champion Machel Cedenio, who crossed the line in 45.10 beating Demish Gaye of Jamaica (45.30).
USA’s Phyllis Francis cruised home in 50.71 to take the women’s 400m. Miguel Francis of Antigua and Barbuda, who trains with Bolt at the Racers Track Club under coach Glen Mills, dominated the men’s 200m – winning in a time of 20.16 (+0.3).
Jamaica’s Ristananna Tracey topped the 400m hurdles in 55.97 and USA's Spencer Adams the men's 110m hurdles in 13.48 (+0.1).
Allyson Felix had been forced to withdraw from the meeting with a minor injury.

A world-leading long jump of 8.45m (+0.8) by Marquise Goodwin highlighted the Meeting Region Guadeloupe. Mike Hartfield was second with 8.34m (+0.3) PB and world indoor champion Marquise Dendy third with 8.19m (+0.7).
Asafa Powell, who won a 200m last week in Kingston, dominated the 100m with a 10.04 (+0.3) meet record.
World leader Kirani James continued his promising start to the 2016 campaign after he ran away with the men's 400m event with an impressive 44.15. The Grenadian Olympic champion beat compatriot Bralon Taplin with 44.54 and Javon Francis of Jamaica, who ran a season's best of 44.77.
In the half-lap event, world leader LaShawn Merritt stopped the clock at 20.15 (-0.2) to win. Behind him BeeJay Lee ran 20.31 and Andre De Grasse 20.46 after his third in the 100m (10.20).
Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica topped the women’s 400m hurdles in 55.34, while USA’s Jordin Andrade ran 49.52 to defeat a pair of Jamaicans - Roxroy Cato (49.98) and Leford Green (49.98) - in the men's hurdles.
Kristi Castlin took the women’s 100m hurdles in a meet record of 12.69 (+0.1), as she led an American top three sweep. Sharika Nelvis ran 12.76 for second and Queen Harrison finished third with the same time.
On the men's side, Ronnie Ash of USA came out on top in the 110m hurdles, after running 13.33 (+0.1). He defeated Aleec Harris, also of USA, with 13.43.
In the women’s 100m, Americans English Gardner clocked an 11.04 meet record (-0.3) ahead of Alexandria Anderson's 11.28.
Francena McCorory of USA won the women’s 400m in 50.73. Kenyattia Hackworth leaped to 6.61m to win the women's long jump.
The 2007 world champion Tyson Gay showed top shape at the NTC Pure Athletics meet by running 10.03 twice, once in the heats (+1.9) and again in the finals (+0.4). Second in that final was Daniel Bailey of Antigua with 10.14 (10.12 in heats). Dedric Dukes won the other final in 10.13 (+1.4).
Germany's Aleixo Platini Menga improved in the 200m to 20.27 (0.0) ahead of Dukes' 20.41. Julian Reus won the other race in 20.41 (+2.0).
Kelly-Ann Baptiste clocked 11.14 (+0.3) in the 100m ahead of Jo Atkins' 11.22 and Rebekka Haase's 11.22. In the 200m, Atkins clocked 22.40 (+1.4) beating Baptiste's 22.73.
The adidas BOOST Meeting in Germany had a third world lead in two days as Senbere Teferi won the women's 5000m in 14:46.61. Behind her, Sentayehu Lewetegn ran 15:20.55 and top German Sabrina Mockenhaupt 15:40.03.
The 2011 world champion Yohan Blake was the 100m winner in 10.03 (+1.1) over Warren Weir with 10.20 and Keston Bledman with 10.27.
The women's 100m was won in a high-quality 10.91 (+1.2) by world leader Tori Bowie over Michelle-Lee Ahye with 11.07 and Britain's Desiree Henry with 11.23.
The morning session of the first day of the Ibero-American Championships, which is the Olympic test event at the Havelange Stadium, saw a world-leading mark in the women's high jump by US record-holder Chaunte Lowe who cleared 1.96m on her third attempt.
The afternoon session had Fabiana Murer winning the pole vault with 4.60m. In the 100m, Rosangela Santos won the women's final in 11.24 (+0.6) over Ecuador talent Angela Tenorio with 11.29. Stanly Del Carmen from Dominican Republic topped the men's final in 10.27 (+0.4) over Bruno de Barros with 10.28 and Colombian Diego Palomeque with 10.30.
Two weeks after becoming a father, Lucas Rotich won $25,000 with victory in the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K in New York in 28:29 ahead of Wilson Chebet (28:37) and Ethiopia’s Teshome Mekonen (28:47).
There was a Kenyan clean sweep in the women’s race led by Cynthia Limo in 31:39 courtesy of a quick second half of 15:37. Mary Wacera (31:51) and Edna Kiplagat (31:58) finished second and third respectively.
Wacera will now try and make the Kenyan Olympic team over 10,000m.
Top Americans: Alex Monroe (29:57) and Laura Thweatt (33:20) in seventh and sixth respectively.
