Ojie Edoburun among athletes to show strong early-season form - weekly round-up

Edoburun clocks a world-class 60m PB, while Lily Partridge wins the Seville Half and Holly Mills is third at the Combined Events International

Much attention this weekend was on the area cross country championships (reports here) and Laura Muir's Scottish 800m record (report here), but other events included the following.

London Indoor Games, Lee Valley, January 28

Ojie Edoburun won the 60m in a world-class 6.58 PB, while Irish sprinter Amy Foster equalled the Irish 60m record with 7.30.

Kingston, Jamaica, January 28

In this outdoor meeting, double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson won the 60m in 7.18, while in the 200m Zharnel Hughes showed great early-season form to win the 200m in a fast 20.28.

Padova, Italy, January 28

Larissa Iapichino, the 15-year-old daughter of two-time world long jump champion Fiona May, broke the Italian under-20 long jump record with a leap of 6.36m.

Indoor Combined Events International, Madrid, January 27/28

Team captain Jo Rowland placed fifth in the women’s pentathlon with a score of 4291 points to move to eighth place on the UK all-time list.

Eliska Klucinova of the Czech Republic won the event with 4580 points and European champion Antoinette Nana Djimou of France was second with 4456.

The British team finished third, with Emma Nwofor bettering 4000 points for the first time to go fifth all-time in the under-23 age group with a total of 4073, which included a 1.78m high jump.

In the men’s heptathlon, men’s captain Andrew Murphy added 90 points to his PB with a total of 5492.

Holly Mills achieved the highest individual place of the British athletes in taking third with 4022 points in the under-20 women’s event, with Jade O’Dowda's PB also over 4000 points.

Vienna, Austria January 27

Jamie Webb continued his good form and his 1:47.33 narrow 800m win was briefly a world lead.

Eilidh Doyle ran 52.34 in the 400m, while 20 year-old Lee Thompson set an overall 400m PB of 46.74.

ISTAF Indoor Berlin, Germany, January 26

Andrew Pozzi had a strong season start with a 7.58 60m hurdles win.

Jazmin Sawyers leapt 6.31m in the long jump.

New York, USA, January 26

Charlie Grice clocked 3:58.31 for fifth in the mile, while James West ran a 7:58.26 3000m PB for ninth.

Welsh Indoor Championships, Cardiff, January 27

Sally Peake cleared a 4.27m CBP for the Welsh indoor pole vault title ahead of Molly Caudery with an indoor PB of 4.17m.

Ieuan Thomas won the 1500m in 3:53.89.

Sam Gordon and Imani Lansiquot won the 60m titles in respective times of 6.71 and 7.41.

Val De Reuil, France, January 27

Ethiopian Samuel Tefera won the 1500m in a world junior indoor record of 3:36.05.

There was a surprise world lead and African record for Burkina Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango with a 17.23m triple jump win.

Wilfred Koffi of Ivory Coast won the 60m in 6.63 ahead of world and European indoor champion Richard Kilty who also ran 6.63.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke was second in the 800m in 2:02.90.

State College, USA, January 26

Returning from injury, British 60m hurdles record-holder Tiffany Porter opened her season with a 8.16 win.

Hastings, New Zealand, January 27

Olympic pole vault bronze medallist Eliza McCartney began her season by clearing 4.70m off a 10-stride run-up.

Osaka Japan, January 28

On her marathon debut, 22-year-old Mizuki Matsuda ran a quicker second half to win in 2:22:44 from Honami Maeda (2:23:48) and pre-race favourite Yuka Ando (2:27:37).

New York, USA, January 27

The women’s mile was won by Kate Van Buskirk’s Canadian record 4:26.92.

World medallist Ajee Wilson won the 800m in 2:00.90.

Lubbock, USA, January 27

Kenyan Michael Saruni followed up his 600m world best with a world-leading 800m of 1:45.19.

Three athletes cleared 2.30m in the high jump with victory going to Jeron Robinson ahead of Trey Culver and Vernon Turner.

World champion Brittney Reese won the long jump with a 6.57m leap.

Seattle, USA, January 27

Dutch world indoor champion Sifan Hassan clocked a world-leading 8:34.45 in the 3000m on an oversized 307m track ahead of Shalane Flanagan’s 8:43.28.

Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia won the mile in 3:56.95, while Jordan Geist won the shot with a 21.45m throw.

Britain’s Lynsey Sharp won the 800m in 2:04.97.

Seville, January 28

Returning to the city where she made her marathon debut last year, Lily Partridge won the half-marathon in a course record of 71:09.

Sendafa, Ethiopia, January 28

Held at a unfavourable 2355m altitude, Getaneh Molla won the national half-marathon title in 61:25 and qualified for the World Championships in Valencia.

Zeyneba Yimer was the surprise women women’s winner in 70:24.

Marrakech, Morocco, January 28

Ethiopia’s Tinbit Gidey Weldegebriel won the marathon in 2:26:48, while Kenyan Wycliffe Kipkorir won the men’s race in 2:11:04.

Hicham Amghar won the men’s half-marathon in 60:23.

Boston, USA, January 27

Shadrack Kipchirchir won the mile in a world-leading 3:55.52.

Houston, USA, January 27

Murielle Ahoure ran the fastest 60m time in the world so far this year with her 7.07 victory.

Fayetteville, USA, January 27

There was a world-leading 400m for Linna Irby of 51.48 just ahead of Kendal Ellis’ 51.53.

Canberra Australia, January 28

World champion Sally Pearson won the 100m hurdles in 12.87 into a 1.2 headwind.

Spala, Poland, January 28

European indoor champion Konrad Bukowiecki of Poland won the shot with a 21.23m throw.

Volgograd, Russia, January 28

World champion Maria Lasitskene won the high jump with a 2.04m world lead to go equal eighth all-time in the indoor lists.

Hustopece, Czech Republic, January 27

Russia's world silver medalist Danil Lysenko won the high jump in a world-leading 2.37m.

Northern Ireland and Ulster Intermediate and Masters Championships, Dundonald, January 27

North Down’s 18-year-old Craig McMeechan won the men’s intermediate race over 8km by 40 seconds.

Foyle Valley were clear winners of the team competition.

The women’s intermediate title also went a teenager as 16-year-old Rebecca Wallace won the 4km.

With all of last year’s medallists missing, Ian Bailey scored an upset in the men's 6km masters’ race.

Catherine Diver won the women's masters’ 4km race.
