Commonwealth silver medallist clears 1.96m at Eberstadt Hochsprung

Isobel Pooley cleared 1.96m to break the British outdoor high jump record* in Germany on Sunday.

The 21-year-old - fresh from claiming Commonwealth silver in Glasgow - added four centimetres to her personal best to equal the mark cleared by heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson indoors at the British Championships in Sheffield in February which was at the time the outright British record.

Understandably delighted with her performance, which saw her finish fifth on countback in a competition won by Lithuania's Airine Palsyte with 1.98m, Pooley later tweeted: "Jumped 1.96m in Eberstadt today to become the new British outdoor record holder! Will let you know when it feels even remotely real #wow"

Pooley's previous best of 1.92m had been set when finishing as runner-up to Australia's Eleanor Patterson in Glasgow and she had said after that competition how the result had provided a welcome confidence boost and that she was looking forward to “flying higher” in the future.

“I think every human carries doubt and will be calling on those limiting beliefs,” she explained in Glasgow. “You put a limit on it and say I can only be as good as this. You just have to go for it and accept that no one really knows how good you can be.

"You never know how high you can fly until you spread your wings and I think I've unfurled them today," she added following her silver medal-winning performance. "Hopefully I can fly even higher in the future."
