Ethiopia's world 1500m champion clocks 5:23.75 in Sabadell

Genzebe Dibaba clocked the quickest ever 2000m in Sabadell on Tuesday (February 7), running 5:23.75 to improve on the previous best marks run either indoors or out.

The 25-year-old is now the fastest ever indoors over 1500m, the mile, 2000m, 3000m, two miles and 5000m, while she also has the outdoor world 1500m record to her name.

Ethiopia's Dibaba, who has won three world indoor titles and also claimed 1500m gold at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in 2015 plus Olympic silver last year, passed halfway in 2:42.65 and eventually sliced almost seven seconds from the world indoor best time which had been set by Gabriela Szabo in 1998.

Dibaba's time is also quicker than Sonia O’Sullivan’s outdoor mark of 5:25.36.

Behind her, Morocco's Siham Hilali clocked 5:52.88, while Dibaba's younger sister, Anna, ran 5:55.34.

Also in Sabadell on Tuesday, Spain's European 5000m silver medallist Adel Mechaal claimed a clear win in the 3000m, clocking 7:48.39, while European champion Adam Kszczot won the 800m in 1:46.31.
