Fionnuala McCormack wins at Cross Cup in Brussels - global update
Fionnuala McCormack claimed back-to-back victories at the IRIS Cross Cup in Brussels (EA CC Permit), winning the 6km in 19:28 ahead of home favourite Louise Carton and Britain's Laura Weightman, who were both timed at 19:46.
European under-23 champion Isaac Kimeli won the 9km in 26:26 by two seconds from Jeroen D’Hoedt, who bounced back from a DNF in Chia. Soutane Bouchiki was third in 26:38.
Two months after finishing second in the Amsterdam Marathon in 2:05:45, Sammy Kitwara claimed the first marathon victory of his career in the Taipei Marathon in a course record of 2:09:59. Mercy Kibarus won the women’s race in 2:36:33.
Ryo Hashimoto and Taiki Yoshimura clocked PBs of 2:11:20 and 2:12:19 to claim first and second in the Hofu Yomiuri Marathon, with Yuki Kawauchi finishing third in 2:12:19 just two weeks after his third place finish in the Fukuoka Marathon in 2:09:11.
This was Kawauchi’s ninth marathon of the season and he has finished on the podium in seven of them. It was also his 50th sub-2:16 marathon of his career.
Hisae Yoshimatsu won the women’s race in 2:40:21.

Olympic 5000m silver medallist Hellen Obiri beat a strong field to claim her second victory in the Athletics Kenya Cross Country Series in Machakos. She clocked 33:29 in the 10km as she pulled away from 1500m Olympic winner Faith Kipyegon on the final lap.
"I am not in my best shape yet and I hope to hit the right form ahead of the World Cross Country Championships," Obiri said for Daily Nation. For Kipyegon, who clocked 33:47, it was her first race since the Zurich Diamond League meeting.
Her elder sister, Beatrice Chepkemoi from Keringet, finished third in 33:56 as the 2015 Berlin Marathon champion Gladys Cherono, who was competing in her first race since March having recovered from a lower back injury, was fourth in 34:24.
Charles Muneria won the men's 10km race in 29:32. A distant second was Peter Emase with 29:46.
Shadrack Langat won the junior 8km race in 24:03, while Edna Jebitok topped the junior women's 6km in 20:21.

Bahrain’s Aweke Ayalew retained his title at the Cross Internacional Venta de Banos, winning the 10.577km in 32:42 ahead of top Kenyan steeplechaser Jairus Birech (33:04) and European 10,000m bronze medallist Antonio Abadia (33:31).
Ethiopia’s Etenesh Diro won the women’s 7.57km in 30:35 ahead of Trihas Gebre (30:40) and Alessandra Aguilar (30:50).
From the bobsleigh World Cup in Lake Placid it is interesting to note a second place finish in the women's competition for American hurdler Lolo Jones with Elana Meyers Taylor.
In the men's four-men competition, Britain's 2004 Olympic sprint relay gold medallist Mark Lewis-Francis achieved a sixth place with Lamin Deen, Andrew Matthews and Tremayne Gilling.
