Kenyan creates history at the Adizero Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach on Saturday
Fifteen months after clocking a women's world 10km record of 28:46 in a mixed race in Valencia, Agnes Ngetich clocked a women-only world record of 29:27 at the Adizero Road To Records event in Herzogenaurach.
The 24-year-old Kenyan won by more than a minute at a German meeting that saw a number of world record attempts.
Ngetich passed halfway in 14:37 and finished with a 14:50 second half to beat a 30:01 mark that was held by the late Agnes Tirop.
“I’m so excited, I didn’t expect this,” she said. “Last year I missed it by two seconds, so I wanted to come here today and try for it again. I’m so proud of myself. After missing out on the Olympics last year, I want to make up for it this year at the World Championships.”
A few weeks after his 1500m victory over the Olympic metric mile medallists in the first Grand Slam Track event in Jamaica, Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi again showed his endurance by winning the men’s mile in a Kenyan record of 3:52.45, putting him No.3 on the world all-time list.
World road mile champion Hobbs Kessler was second in a PB of 3:54.34, just ahead of fellow American Nico Young's 3:54.50.
In the women’s mile, Nelly Chepchirchir of Kenya repeated her 2024 victory with a 4:23 win.
On a big weekend for road running, with the focus mainly on the London Marathon, Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha came within five seconds of the world 5km record in Herzogenaurach with 12:54. Kejelcha finished nine seconds ahead of Andrew Alamisi of Kenya.
Medina Eisa of Ethiopia won her third women's 5km at this meeting in 14:48, holding off Fotyen Tesfay (14:50) and Gela Hambese (14:51).
In the men’s 10km Birhanu Balew of Bahrain won a close race in 26:54 from Ethiopia’s Gemechu Dida Diriba and Bahrain’s Rodrigue Kwizera.
