The Brit will compete over the 200m and 400m at the Kingston Slam in early April
Dina Asher-Smith has signed up to Grand Slam Track and will be a Challenger in both the 200m and 400m at the Kingston Slam in Jamaica (April 4-6).
The Brit, who became world 200m champion in Doha six years ago, will compete against the likes of Marileidy Paulino, Alexis Holmes, Nickisha Pryce, Salwa Eid Naser and Gabby Thomas over both half and a full lap at Independence Park.
Asher-Smith still holds the British 200m record of 21.88 – a time that propelled her to the world 200m title – and recently improved her personal best in the 400m to 52.31.
The 29-year-old, who is also a world 100m bronze and silver medallist, is now training out in Texas under the guidance of Edrick Floréal.
Athletes at Grand Slam Track are classified as either Racers and Challengers and are assigned to compete in one of the following categories: short sprints (100m/200m), short hurdles (100m hurdles or 110m hurdles/100m), long sprints (200m/400m), long hurdles (400H/400m), middle distance (800m/1500m), or long distance (3000m/5000m).
The final placement score for athletes will be determined by their combined finishing order between the two races. The winner of each Slam group will take home $100,000 in prize money and the eighth place competitor will earn $10,000.
In Kingston, which is the first of four Slams on the 2025 calendar, Paulino, Holmes, Pryce, Eid Naser and Thomas are Racers and Asher-Smith is a Challenger. Two other Challengers will fill the final couple of spots and they are yet to be announced.
Paulino – the reigning Olympic and world 400m champion – has the fastest time over one lap in the entire field with 48.17, which places her fourth on the all-time list.
Eid Naser finished second behind Paulino at the Paris Olympics, while Holmes was sixth in the final at the Stade de France.
Pryce won the 400m at last year’s Diamond League in London with a time of 48.57 and will be buoyed by a partisan Jamaican crowd on home soil.
Thomas, who has a 200m best of 21.60, is the only athlete in the field announced that has a time quicker than Asher-Smith (21.88) over half a lap.
The American, who secured Olympic golds in the 200m and women’s 4x100m/4x400m relays in Paris, also boasts a fastest 400m time of 49.68.
Kingston will kick off the Grand Slam Track series this year, followed by meets in Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
The National Stadium in Jamaica has experience of hosting incredible events, from the Racers Grand Prix and Jamaican National Championships to the ISSA Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships (better known as ‘Champs’).
Grand Slam Track then travels to Miami, with the three-day meet taking place around the same time as the Formula One Grand Prix, on May 2-4.
The Philadelphia and LA Slams are on May 30-June 1 and June 27-29 respectively.
More announcements of Challengers are expected in the lead-up to the Kingston Slam.
