Latest all-round prospect shines at Bedford with impressive age-group victory
ENGLISH SCHOOLS COMBINED EVENT & RACE WALK CHAMPIONSHIPS, Bedford, September 16-17
Commonwealth Youth Games hurdles silver medallist Thea Brown won the inter girls heptathlon with a PB score of 5274 and that moved her to fourth all-time on the UK all-time under-17 women’s rankings – one point ahead of Jade O’Dowda and ahead of a certain Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who had a best of 5146 in this age group.
The 16-year-old’s marks were 11.21/-0.6 in the hurdles, 11.09m in the shot, 1.71m in the high jump and 24.70/1.3 in the 200m, 6.02/2.9 in the long jump, 25.41m in the javelin and 2:26.90 in the 800m. The long jump was her furthest yet and the hurdles was her best legal mark.
It’s worth noting, though, that despite winning the high jump, she does have a 1.84m PB this year so has plenty of scope to score much higher in 2024 when she hits the junior ranks.

It wasn’t a conclusive victory though as only around 60 points back, England under-17 champion Zoe Gregory and third-placer Eden Robinson also bettered the score of the double world champion’s 2008 mark as their respective 5215 and 5213 moved them to sixth and eighth all-time.
Conrad Winter improved on his second place last year but it was a dramatic victory.
In the 110m hurdles, Winter, who has a best time of 15.5 seconds, collided with the last hurdle, sending it three meters down his lane and walked across the line in a time of 21.05 seconds, thinking he would get no points from the hurdles and his challenge was over.
Thirty minutes later he discovered that he had received 271 points compared to his target of 750 points and after an over night lead he was now in sixth place, over 303 points behind the new leader. A 38.15m discus throw kept him sixth but he had closed the gap to 87 points at the top.
In the pole vault Winter cleared a PB 3.90m to move up to third, but was now 169 points behind the new leader ESAA pole vault runner-up Sulaiman Ouiles who cleared 4.40m.
Ouiles kept the pressure on in the javelin with a PB 46.87m and with Winter opening with his second best ever throw of 50.82m., the gap ahead still looked too far to close but in wet conditions Winter’s final throw – a PB 53.38m – moved him to second 73 points down on his rival and now with a chance of winning.
Winter needed to beat Ouiles by 12 seconds and he set off fast with a 71 opening lap and though slowing he held on to record a PB 4:42.55 to win by just five points. Ouiles set a best ever score of 6318 and ran a PB 4:55.30.
Winter said: “Even after the hurdles, I truly believed that I could still win!”
Sam Wright failed to finish in 2022 but here he won the inter octathlon by over 300 points with a 5435 PB score which moved him to 10th all-time on the UK rankings.
The first 24 set PBs in the junior pentathlon but there was a clear win for Daniel Brown who moved to ninth all-time with a score of 3271.
Nene Davenport, only 15th last year, won a hard fought senior girls heptathlon with a score of 4776 giving her 29 points advantage over Millie Hardy.
The junior girls pentathlon was also close with masses of PBs as Gracie Osman 3244 edged Molly Mills’ 3229.
