"Developmental squad" combining more experienced athletes with up and coming stars selected for team event in Braunschweig

The Great Britain & Northern Ireland team has been named for the European Team Championships to be held in Braunschweig, Germany, on June 21-22.

Labelled a "developmental squad" by UK Athletics performance director Neil Black, it features a number of experienced athletes as well as those receiving senior team selection for the first time.

Olympic champion Greg Rutherford, who had his British long jump record leap of 8.51m ratified by the national governing body recently, will be joined in Germany by the likes of 2009 world triple jump champion Phillips Idowu, who continues his comeback after having taken a break away from the sport for the "foreseeable future" in 2013.

Also among the more experienced members of the squad are 2011 world 1500m silver medallist Hannah England, 2010 Commonwealth 400m hurdles silver medallist Eilidh Child and 2009 world 800m bronze medallist Jenny Meadows, while high jumper Chris Baker, pole valter Lucy Bryan and long jumper Jazmin Sawyers all compete for the senior GB team for the first time.

Danny Talbot, who on Monday ran a 200m PB of 20.36 in Prague, has been selected for the 100m, the sprinter having also recorded a lifetime best of 10.14 over the distance in Bedford last month, while the 200m spot is filled by James Ellington. In the women's events, Rachel Johncock and Anyika Onuora are to run the 100m and 200m respectively.

Adam Gemili, Richard Kilty and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey join Talbot and Ellington on the 4x100m squad, as Johncock and Onuora are joined by Louise Bloor, Bianca Williams and Jodie Williams on the women's sprint relay squad, Jodie Williams also named for the 4x400m.

"We head to Germany with the aim of being competitive and to challenge for as many points as possible," commented Black, with the GB team finishing third behind Russia and Germany in the points table at last year's event held in Gateshead.

"In comparison to last year’s team, this is very much a developmental squad due to the confines of a crowded calendar this summer and the Sainsbury’s British Championships just a week later.

"It is also great that our senior 400m and 4x400m athletes have wholeheartedly supported the plan to give up and coming athletes the opportunity to perform on this stage.

"It will greatly benefit the teams for future major championships, and I am really looking forward to seeing how these guys perform. There may be one or two surprises."
