Kenyan takes an emphatic victory in the German event as Rosemary Wanjiru takes the women's race.
Sabastian Sawe and Rosemary Wanjiru made it a Kenyan double at the BMW Berlin Marathon on Sunday (Sept 21).
Sawe clocked 2:02:16 in the men's race while Wanjiru was first in the women's category with 2:21:05.
In the run-up to the race, Sawe invited anti-doping authorities to test him multiple times. The initiative, which was done in conjunction with his sponsor adidas, was an attempt to prove that not all Kenyans are cheats.
This was a world record attempt, too, but after a first half of 60:16 he began to fade in the latter stages.
The 29-year-old, who specialised in half-marathon for a number of years, won the Valencia Marathon last year in 2:02:05 and then won in London in April in 2:02:27.
The race unfolded shortly before the final session at the World Championships in Tokyo was set to start, but it featured a Japanese runner in second place behind Sawe.
Akira Akasaki clocked 2:06:15 as Chimbesse Debele of Ethiopia ran 2:06:57 in third.
Guye Adola of Ethiopia, who ran what was, at the time, the world's fastest debut marathon in Berlin in 2017 of 2:03:46, was fourth in 2:07:11.
Another Japanese runner, Yuhei Urano, was fifth in 2:07:35.
Wanjiru beat Ethiopians Dera Dida (2:21:08) and Azmera Gebru (2:21:29) with Viola Cheptoo of Kenya fourth (2:21:40).
Britain's Sam Harrison was 14th in 2:29:44.
