Russian race walking coach Viktor Chegin has been handed a lifetime ban, the Russian athletics federation announced on Friday (March 25).
Chegin was suspended last July. As AW magazine reported at the time, more than 20 of the Cheboksary-based coach's athletes had tested positive for banned drugs over a period of several years.
The Russian athletics federation stated that Chegin's life ban came into force on February 17, 2016.
"Viktor Chegin is not allowed to participate in any capacity in international and national competitions," read the Russian athletics federation statement, translated by Google translate, in part.
"The application of sanctions suggests ban any activity in the field of physical culture and sports as a coach, teacher, manager, agent, technical staff of the team, official, medical, paramedical personnel, or in any other capacity, expected to work with the athlete, the organisation of the training process, health care or assist the athlete in preparing and participating in sports. These restrictions apply to all sports and sports institutions."
This news comes a day after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld an IAAF appeal against the "selective" disqualifications handed down by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency to six of its athletes. Five race walkers - Sergey Kirdyapkin, Olga Kaniskina, Valeriy Borchin, Vladimir Kanaykin and Sergey Bakulin - were among the six.
