The Tonbridge athlete clocked 18:54.18 in Bratislava to take almost half a minute off the British record

Tom Bosworth clocked 18:54.18 to break the British indoor 5000m race walk record in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Sunday.

That time, which takes almost half a minute off the record set by Martin Rush in 1992, saw Bosworth claim victory ahead of Poland's Grzegorz Sudol with 19:09.62, Ireland's 2013 50km race walk gold medallist Robert Heffernan with 19:19.83 and the 2015 world 50km champion Matej Tóth of Slovakia with 19:25.42.

"Very happy to win today!" Bosworth wrote on Twitter. "Smashing my overall 5k PB, indoor @BritAthletics record, first Brit ever under 19mins!

"Can't quite believe who've I've just beaten and how well that race went," he added. "Didn't even feel good before it! Wow!"

Bosworth's Leeds training partner Callum Wilkinson also had a record-breaking performance as he bettered the British under-20 record with his time of 19:39.69 to finish sixth.
