AYO FALOLA DREAM MILE, Lee Valley, February 16

Making the most of a relatively rare chance to run a mile, there were six record marks in this meeting dedicated to the renowned coach and former sprinter who lost his battle with cancer in 2015.

Paul Forbes, who has already set a world M65 record at 800m and an UK record in the 1500m, added to his record breaking by easily beating American Frank Condon's 5:11.43 from Boston in 2008 with a 5:04.01 in finishing sixth in race two.

Paul Forbes

The previous British indoor best was Dave Bedwell's 5:21.41 from 2019 which was also the overall indoor or outdoor best.

While Northern Ireland's Dave Clarke had run a 5:00.30 in December, the previous officially listed M60 best was significantly slower than the M65 mark with 5:31.88 from Peter Mountain but that peak was easily surpassed as ahead of Forbes, Colin Ridley added his name to UK record-setters with a 4:58.23 which only one M60 has bettered outdoors (Dave Wilcock 4:55.87).

There was a third record in the same heat - possibly the first time that three UK records have been set in the space of 40 seconds - as Derek Jackson improved the M70 mark to 5:36.03. He was just over six seconds down on the world mark of American Gary Patton's 5:29.81.

Jackson, who is coached by former Olympic fourth-placer Christina Boxer, holds the UK M70 outdoor record of 5:29.57. The previous M70 indoor best was 6:57.54 and Jackson formerly held the M65 indoor mark prior to Bedwell.

In race four, Tony O'Brien set a British M50 record of 4:33.08 to add to his outdoor best of 4:29.06.

The previous best indoor age-group mark was Adrian Haines' 4:40.97 from Boston in 2018.

The other British records fell in the women's race. Double World Masters indoor champion Zoe Doyle ran 5:03.96 in a race won by senior Sarah Chapman's 4:47.11.

Doyle thus improved Bernadine Pritchett's 5:06.42 from Boston in 2008.

In the same race, in second English Schools 1500m champion Shaikira King also set an UK under-15 and under-17 best of 4:51.43 though this was the first high quality indoor mile in the younger age group.

Shaikira King (James Rhodes)

The under-17 best was 50 years old and previously held by Pam Davis with 4:56.4 in 1972.

The 13-year-old King ranks second all-time outdoors in the under-15s with 4:50.00 behind Emelia Gorecka's 4:46.87 and her time at Lee Valley was actually the fastest a British under-20 has ever run in the UK.

Though he didn't set a record, Mick Hill also impressed as his 4:28.35 in the UK M45 age group has only been bettered by Tony Whiteman's world mark of 4:12.45 which is better than the UK M35 and M40 marks!

British under-23 outdoor 3000m record-holder Tom Mortimer was the fastest overall miler with 4:00.96.

There were also free to enter children's races and the organiser Peter Scott was able to provide caps, sports bag, water bottles and t-shirts to winners and participants.
