Mare Dibaba and Jake Robertson win Lisbon Half - global update
New Zealand’s Jake Robertson made a brilliant debut in the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon, winning in 60:00 ahead of Kenyans James Mwangi (60:10) and Edwin Koech (60:44).
Robertson was on course to break his twin brother Zane’s Oceanian half-marathon record of 59:47 but dropped off record pace in the closing stages.
In a tactical women’s race, Mare Dibaba outsprinted Vivian Cheruiyot, 69:43 to 69:44, with Mary Wacera third in 69:53.
On the road to the Hamburg Marathon next month, Jessica Augusto was the top home finisher in seventh in 70:38, with European marathon champion Christelle Daunay 10th in 72:03.
Amos Kipruto led a top-10 sweep for Kenya in the Seoul Marathon, winning in a lifetime best of 2:05:54 to move to fourth on the world rankings.
Kipruto defeated Felix Kipchirchir (2:06:03) and Frankfurt Marathon winner Mark Korir (2:06:05), with Nobert Kipkoech (2:06:07) and reigning champion Wilson Loyanae (2:06:27) also ducking under the 2:07-mark in fourth and fifth.
The top eight finishers ran under the 2:10-mark.
Margaret Agai won the women’s race in 2:25:52 from Ethiopia’s Ashete Bekere (2:25:57) and Kenya’s Mercy Kibarus (2:26:52).
Former track star Priscah Jepleting was fifth in 2:28:29.
Olympic fourth-placer from Rio, Canadian Evan Dunfee, won the 50km race walk event in Mexico as part of IAAF Race Walking Challenge in 3:46:02.
Second was Andres Chocho of Ecuador with 3:47:36 and third Quentin Rew of New Zealand with 3:51:17.
Kenyans claimed a clean sweep in the men's race at the Los Angeles Marathon with Elisha Barno (2:11:51), Daniel Limo (2:12:15) and Willy Koitile (2:12:46) filling the first three spots.
Kenya’s Hellen Jepkurgat won the women’s race in 2:34:23 ahead of teammate Jane Kibii (2:36:14) and Colombia’s Angela Orjuela (2:36:20).
World indoor shot put champion Tom Walsh won at the New Zealand Championships with 21.51m and also had two other throws over 21m: 21.07m and 21.35m.
During the last day of the event, Olympic bronze medallist Eliza McCartney won the pole vault with 4.55m before three attempts at 4.70m.
Joseph Millar achieved a 100/200m double, clocking 10.18 in the 100m and a national record of 20.37 (+0.1) in the 200m (also a London 2017 qualifier), while Zoe Hobbs clocked 11.57/23.85 to win a sprint double on the women’s side.
Fiona Morrison clocked 13.35 to win the 100m hurdles while Angie Petty won a 800/1500m double in 2:03.35/4:19.54.
Akani Simbine clocked a fast 9.92 world lead (+1.2) in the 100m at the Athletics Gauteng North Championships. Behind him Thando Roto improved to 9.95.
Gift Leotlela improved in the under-20 heats the national junior record to 10.12 (+1.1).
Ashley Hlungwani clocked 46.27 in the 400m but had a 45.97 PB in heats. Tiaan Smit won the 110m hurdles in a windy 13.49 (+2.3) and beat Ruan de Vries with 13.67.
Orazio Cremona achieved 20.08m in the shot put and Friedrich Pretorius scored 8002 points in the decathlon.
