British multi-eventer goes to second on world rankings, boosted by a PB in the long jump of 6.63m

Jessica Ennis-Hill honed her preparations for the defence of her Olympic title by winning the Erdgas Mehrkampf-Meeting in Ratingen, Germany, with a tally of 6733.

The Sheffield athlete , who had led overnight. started the day in superb fashion with a PB in the long jump of 6.63m. This bettered the 6.51m previous best she had achieved in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Her 44.37 in the javelin was just short of her season's best and a 2:11.46 in the 800m saw her 2257 points clear of runner-up Carolin Shafer of Germany.

Only world indoor pentathlon champion Brianne Theisen-Eaton, with 6765, has scored a higher total in 2016. Meanwhile, it was 66 points more than Ennis-Hill scored to win the world title in Beijing last year.

Yesterday, Ennis-Hill enjoyed a solid day as she opened up with 13.13 in the 100m hurdles and high jumped 1.84m. She then threw the shot 14.29m - her best since 2012 - and her 23.36 in the 200m was also her best since Olympic year.

Germany's Arthur Abele won the decathlon with a PB of 8605, which takes him to the top of the world list for 2016. Britain's Martin Brockman was eighth with 7004 points.
