Canadian wins decathlon for the eighth time while Vetter shows great form ahead of this summer's major championships

Damian Warner won the decathlon at the Hypo-Meeting in Götzis for the eighth time with a score of 8678 while Anouk Vetter won the heptathlon with a world lead of 6642.

As Warner reigned supreme in the Austrian town, Sven Roosen of the Netherlands improved his best from 8157 points to 8517 points to finish second as Johannes Erm of Estonia was third.

Simon Ehammer led the competition overnight but Canadian Warner passed him after the seventh event – with a 46.41m discus – and the Swiss athlete withdrew before the 1500m.

Warner’s marks were: 10.20 (100m), 7.80m (long jump), 14.55m (shot), 2.03m (high jump), 47.46 (400m), 13.45 (110m hurdles), 46.41m (discus), 4.80m (pole vault), 57.53m (javelin), 4:36.94 (1500m).

With world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson competing instead at the Loughborough International, Vetter of the Netherlands beat Annik Kalin of Switzerland by 136 points as Michelle Atherley of the United States was third.

Vetter’s javelin was particularly impressive as she threw 57.91m – four metres further than her rivals – to move into pole position in the penultimate event.

Vetter’s marks in total were: 13.64 (100m hurdles), 1.74m (high jump), 15.37m (shot), 23.73 (200m), 6.47m (long jump), 57.91m (javelin), 2:21.37 (800m).

Britain’s Abigail Pawlett (6011 PB) and Holly Mills (5298) finished 11th and 17th.

For Trafford athlete Pawlett it makes her the 20th British heptathlete to break the 6000 points barrier.
