Italian capital wins race to stage the event ahead of Katowice-Silesia in Poland

Half a century after Rome held the 1974 European Championships, the event will return to the Italian capital.

Rome beat Katowice-Silesia of Poland in the bid for the 2024 event. After Turin held the 1934 European Championships it will be the third time Italy has hosted the competition.

Delegates from both Rome and Katowice-Silesia had the opportunity to present their bids on the first day of the 160th European Athletics Council Meeting, held virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Katowice-Silesia bid will now enter into discussions with European Athletics concerning the hosting of a future edition of the flagship event.

Dobromir Karamarinov, European Athletics interim president, said: "We are very pleased to announce that Rome will be hosting the 2024 European Athletics Championships and we would like to thank Katowice-Silesia for their excellent bid as well.

"Italy has already demonstrated they are capable of staging excellent athletics championships across all age groups and I am sure that athletes and fans alike will look forward to travelling to Rome in 2024."

It will be the first major athletics competition to be held in the Italian capital since the 1987 World Athletics Championships, with the 2024 European Championships also taking place in the famous Stadio Olimpico.

The host city for the 2023 European Indoor Championships and 2023 European U23 Championships are set to be allocated on the second day of the European Athletics Council Meeting on Wednesday.
