Class of 2017 looks for top marks at English Schools Championships

A preview to the action at the English Schools event in Birmingham

A number of rising athletics stars will be in action in Birmingham on Friday and Saturday (July 7-8) as the New Balance English Schools Championships takes place at the Alexander Stadium for its 87th edition.

Here we list some of the contenders. Check out the July 6 edition of Athletics Weekly magazine for more.

Senior events

In the 200m Romell Glave from Surrey has run 20.95 and won English Schools gold in Gateshead 12 months ago, while Berkshire's Jake Norris has thrown the hammer 78.09m.

Last year the pole vault was won by Molly Caudery (pictured) from Cornwall and this year she has cleared 4.24m.

Intermediate events

Max Burgin from West Yorkshire has run an impressive 1:49.42 in the 800m and won the junior boys’ title last year.

Merseyside runner Ella McNiven has clocked 9:24.50 for the 3000m this year and Eloise Harvey from Kent has achieved 12.10m in what should be a competitive triple jump.

Junior events

One of the top field events could be the high jump, with Sam Brereton from Cornwall having achieved 2.00m this year.

In the 75m hurdles, Abigail Packham from Sussex has run 11.19 this season with Nicole Lannie from South Yorkshire clocking 11.20.
