Greg Rutherford is to miss the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland as he continues to recover from illness and injury, British Athletics has announced.
The Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth long jump champion was forced to withdraw from last month's Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix with a “small muscle tear” and then also missed the Indoor British Championships with illness on top of his hamstring problem.
British Athletics announced that the 29-year-old would no longer be competing at the World Indoors "as he continues to recover from a recent chest infection and slight hamstring issue".
British Athletics performance director, Neil Black, said: "Greg is really disappointed not to be able to compete in Portland, but his body reacted harder than expected to this week's training.
"Defending the Olympic title is obviously Greg’s main focus for 2016, so he has sensibly decided not to take any risks and to end his indoor season here.
"This will allow him the opportunity to concentrate on being in the best shape possible going into the outdoor season and ultimately Rio."
Rutherford had jumped a British indoor record of 8.26m in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the beginning of February.
