The 1500m runner has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to have her eight-year doping suspension shortened

Disgraced Turkish 1500m runner Asli Cakir Alptekin could compete at the Rio Olympics despite having served less than half of her eight-year doping ban if her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to have her suspension reduced is successful.

Alptekin, who won 1500m gold at London 2012 before being stripped of the title last year after abnormalities were detected in her biological passport, is looking to have her ban cut down on the basis of providing assistance to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The 30-year-old was central to a WADA investigation into doping cover-ups in the IAAF after allegations that Papa Massata Diack - son of former IAAF president Lamine Diack - requested a bribe from the runner in return for delaying her suspension.

The IAAF confirmed in a statement that it was CAS who had provisionally lifted Alptekin's ban to allow her to compete ahead of a CAS hearing scheduled for July 4.

Alptekin was banned for two years in 2004 for testing positive for an anabolic steroid and last year agreed with CAS that she would serve an eight-year ban while also having all results obtained between August 1, 2010, and August 10, 2012, disqualified.
