Lasoi leads Kenyan surge to course record in Antrim Coast

Isaia Lasoi and Daniel Mateiko both broke the course record at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon, heading a Kenyan sweep of the podium in Northern Ireland, while Girmawit Gebrzihair won the women's race.

Isaia Lasoi won the Antrim Coast Half Marathon, a World Athletics Elite Label road race, in 58:26 on Sunday (Aug 23) with Daniel Mateiko just four seconds back in 58:30 – both inside the previous course record.

Vincent Kipkorir completed a Kenyan podium sweep in third with 1:00:39, ahead of compatriots Samwel Chebolei (1:01:02) and Amos Langat (1:01:15).

Ethiopia's Yismaw Dillu was fifth in 1:01:06, matched by pacer Adam Lipschitz, while Australia's Jimmy Whelan was eighth in 1:01:19.

American Galen Rupp headed the overseas interest, taking 10th in 1:01:30, with British runner Marc Scott the leading home finisher in 12th, clocking 1:02:25.

In the women's race, Ethiopia's Girmawit Gebrzihair won in 1:06:12, with Kenya's Winnie Kimutai second in 1:07:03 and Ethiopia's Wede Kefale third in 1:07:12. Degitu Azimeraw was fourth in 1:08:44 and American Dakotah Popehn fifth in 1:08:47.

The meeting also featured a 5km, a World Athletics Label event, where Ethiopians took both titles. Aynadis Mebratu won the women's race in 14:51, finishing well clear of Kenya's world 3000m steeplechase record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech, second in 15:11. In the men's race, former world under-20 800m champion Ermias Girma won in 13:50.
