Our verdict

Easily one of the most versatile running shoe I have worn, the Endorphin Speed 2 is comfortable on long runs and responsive enough to handle all your training and help you perform at your best when racing.

  • Positive
  • Nylon plate is responsive and more comfortable than a carbon plate
  • Very smooth and efficient geometry
  • Almost an elite racing shoe at same time a superb training shoe
  • Negative
  • Grip of the outsole is lacking for general training

First impressions

The changes over version 1 are minimal. A slight redesign in heel fit and anti-slip laces, with minor tweaks to the upper. These might improve the shoe for some people, but reality is this is almost the same shoe as V1, which had a comfortable and breathable upper as well, and I honestly noticed none of the changes. This shoe has never been easy to buy due to lack of availability, but if you can snap up the previous version on discount - please do!

Midsole

The main appeal of the Speed 2 is all underfoot, and it’s not been messed with since the excellent first version. You are getting a thick stack of PWRRUN PB foam (think adidas Boost) – 35.5mm at the heel, 27.5mm at the forefoot – with a nylon plate sandwiched through the centre of the midsole plus Saucony’s SPEEDROLL tech, which guides your foot strike efficiently from heel to toe.

These three features create a fantastic ride that is both fast at race pace but equally comfortable on training days.

Upper

An engineered mesh upper is simple and the print is sublimated with some bold graphics. The forefoot has large vent holes and overall the upper works fine, fits well and is nothing radical or innovative - which isnt a bad thing as Saucony are definately leaving budget and margin in the shoe to enhance the midsole.

Sole

The outsole is ok, and its just durable enough to be ok for a high mileage shoe, and light enough to make this perform at pace. The only let down, is that there simply isnt enough traction for multiple surfaces, as the compromise for performance kicks in. The grip is not terrible but its lacking.

Conclusion

I extensively wore the Endorphin Speed last year in many different training and race days as it was one of my favourate shoes then. The shoe was great at every pace and incredibly versatile. If you want to buy just one pair of shoes for everything - there are no shoes better on the market right now.
