The best racing shoe last year is the best this year and for many, it’s the best running shoe ever. Thanks to the exploits of Eluid Kipchoge and the much-hyped benefits of the shoe helping to make the wearer ‘4% more efficient’ or more (and most take that as faster), the shoe has gained a massive following and sells out as soon as it becomes available.
The shoe really is Nike's statement racing shoe and although awesome, comes at a price. If you really cant stretch to it (you won't be alone), nike have some brilliant alternatives. Have a look at the Zoom Fly 3, it still has a carbon plate but is much cheaper. Also do not discount the Air Zoom Streak 7, a shoe loved by racers for years. If you're going long, maybe a marathon, the Air Zoom Pegasus Turbo 2 is certainly light enough for those of us not in the top 10!
It’s all about a combination of PEBAX foam and a carbon-fibre plate. The foam is super-soft and super-resilient meaning it provides comfort (to keep the muscles feeling fresh) and returns to its original form very quickly. The full-length carbon fibre plate stiffens up the MTP joint (the ball of the foot) and basically creates a larger lever by which to push off. The combination of the plate and foam give a feel like nothing else.
The upper is gossamer thin and uses an offset lacing to give a secure fit. It does hold the foot well, but an unusual forefoot shape does leave a little overlapping of the fabric just below the bottom lace loops.
The outsole uses just three pieces of rubber, a large forefoot element and two small pieces in the heel of the shoe. It’s slick, so don’t expect super traction, it’s strictly a road racer. Those heel pieces could be larger or slightly better placed as any heel strike will cause immediate wear to the exposed parts of the foam and it scuffs very quickly. Some will be very disappointed after their first wear to find their super expensive shoes looking decidedly ‘cut up’.
ZoomX foam technology delivers Nike's greatest energy return, providing ultimate responsiveness and cushioning for long distance racing.
Full-length carbon fiber plate is embedded in the foam to enhance propulsion.
High abrasion rubber in the heel prolongs durability.
Foam rubber in the forefoot is extremely lightweight while optimizing traction and energy return.
Traction pattern created by merging the custom designs of Farah, Kipchoge, and Kirui.
Engineered Woven Mesh is lightweight and breathable while providing a secure and comfortable fit.
Offset Lacing helps alleviate pressure and create a locked-in fit.
