Our verdict

Offers maximum cushioning but it comes at a premium price. Ultimately, it's the price that might be the sticking point here. Most of the competitors top-end shoes are much less expensive and as this shoe looks so drastically different, many will feel it's somewhat of a risk to stump up this kind of money. But, if you do, it offers a great smooth and efficient ride, mile after mile.

First impressions

Space age looks to create a stable, cushioned and durable shoe. It's pretty expensive but you get a lot of technology for your money and you can see it all right there in the wave plate cushioning.

The Phrophecy sits at the top of the neutral cushioning range from Mizuno. For a great, cheaper alternative, have a look at the Mizuno Sky 3, Wave Rider 23 or Skyrise models

Midsole

The Infinity Wave plate midsole features two full-length wave plates running in parallel to each other. The principle of the brands' technology is that the wave spreads out impact along its surface, lessening it at the point of initial impact for a smooth landing and roll through. Of course, with two plates you have twice the space to soak up that impact and the result is an incredibly smooth and delivers a suprisingly natural feeling ride.

For high mileage runners or those simply wanting long lasting cushioning (that's also suprisingly stable), it's a very good technology.

Upper

As you would expect of a premium priced shoe and at this price, the upper is very well made. Premium materials and a construction that echos them, creates a well-fitting and comfortable design.

Sole

The X10 rubber outsole has a high carbon content for increased durability.

Conclusion

Offers maximum cushioning but it comes at a premium price. Ultimately, it's the price that might be the sticking point here. Most of the competitors top-end shoes are much less expensive and as this shoe looks so drastically different many will feel it's somewhat of a risk to stump up this kind of money.

Even other shoes from Mizuno may be a more attractive proposition; the new Wave Skyrise for example.

This shoe is different and while it is a shoe thats cushioning is somewhat 'mechanical', it feels very natural.

If you do decide to give it a try, it offers a great smooth and efficient ride, mile after mile.
