Our verdict

A versatile gem of a shoe. Firmer than some Hoka shoes, the Hupana 2 is well-cushioned, responsive and good value for money.

First impressions

Named after the Maori word for ‘spring back’, the Hupana is a versatile shoe. It looks slightly different from the majority of shoes on the market and that’s to be applauded in our book. Out of the box, it has more of a clean but sharp looking upper that sits upon that big RMAT midsole.

Like all Hoka’s, they feel good on, however, the upper on the Hupana 2 is made of a tighter woven mesh than most. While this does hold your foot snugly, we did wonder if they would be as breathable as other models or indeed, their competition.

The other thing we noticed is that they might be a little narrow for the widest feet. They were great on my skinny size US13 feet but I suspect that if I had very wide feet, the Hupana 2 could well be too narrow with not enough room in the toe box. On me, the shoes felt pleasantly snug. The simple flat laces over a well-padded tongue helped give me that ‘locked in’ feeling.

On the run, they provided effortless comfort and cushioning. Be aware that they are firmer than other Hoka’s though. To me, that was a good thing. It would be good to have a different type of pair if I was a Hoka One One fan. The Hupana 2 offers great cushioning and they are probably more responsive that most Hokas.

A big plus point is the Hupana 2’s versatility. I’d be happy running daily in these shoes, but, due to their lightweight nature, they’re also perfect for pace runs and longer races.

The upper was probably not as breathable as a more open mesh shoe but they were OK and the seamless nature of the upper adds to the comfort.

The full length RMAT midsole/outsole provided a lovely combination of cushioning and responsiveness. It is lightweight and resilient. As we’ve stated, it gives you a firm ride than other Hoka’s but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The cushioning is still exceptional.

We are a fan of this slightly different looking knitted upper. While it wouldn’t be as breathable as some shoes, the seamless nature of it felt good on foot. The shoe also enjoys a moulded Ortholite sockliner which felt comfortable underfoot.

The Hupana 2 is a versatile gem. It’ll look after you on your easy runs and will reward you when you want to pick up the pace a little. Its light, responsive and well-cushioned nature offers good value for money and if you are a fan of Hoka, you might want to add this pair to your training shoe collection. Sleek, springy comfort – what’s not to like!
