Our verdict

At this price, for a carbon plated racing shoe, this has to be the best value around. It's a true out and out racer, light and fast, with the added response of carbon fibre. Certainly the best value carbon racer around, so worth a try if you have to join the carbon crowd!

First impressions

A lightweight racer in the classic style of road racing shoes. Whilst it's a HOKA and has their maximal cushioning look, it's no where near the 'new-breed' of super foam, carbon shoes. The carbon plates gives it that extra 'spring' and makes it a good price for such technology.

If you dont need the super light weight but want to try carbon plate technology, check out the Hoka Carbon X. If you aren't feeling brave enough to take the carbon plunge, have a look at the light and more tradional Hoka Mach 3.

The PROFLY midsole used in this model from HOKA basically blends two densities of midsole cushioning. A slightly softer feeling in the heel absorbs impact and as you roll forward onto the forefoot, the sole firms up a little for a more responsive toe-off. This is combined with a full length carbon fibre plate.

The plate has the effect of stiffening the toe-off to create a large lever in the foot.

As with many of these plated shoes, it feels better the faster you go. Once up to speed the shoe feels a lot smoother and rolls through the gait rather well. But be warned, if you are using the shoe for everyday running, you'll find it (like others) a little stiff and clumsy.

A seamless, engineered mesh upper keeps the weight to a minimum and is very breathable. It's a typical racing shoe upper, no fuss and simply provides a cool, wrap around fit.

The rubberised foam outsole adds durability to the shoe without adding too much extra weight. This blend essenially retains some cushioning properties whilst being a little more hard wearing.

It's a tradditional racing shoe feel, so firm, light and benefits from mid to forefoot striking in order to get the best from it.

At around half the price of some carbon fibre plated road running shoes, it's somewhat of a bargain and ultimately makes you question why carbon adds so much additional cost to other brands?!

Worth a try if you want to experience the feel of carbon fibre in a running shoe and are also on the look out for a lightweight racer.
