Hannah Cockroft leads the wave of the first British athletes to be selected for the 2025 championships in India

UK Athletics has named the first group of athletes who will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at this year’s World Para Athletics Championships, set to take place in Delhi, India, from September 26 to October 5.

The first wave of selections includes seven medallists from the Paris Paralympic Games. The performance objectives associated with this selection are for athletes to medal at these championships and to support the athletes' potential for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games. A second phase of team selections is expected in August.

Among the chosen names is 16-time world champion Hannah Cockroft, who will compete in the T34 100m and 800m. Joining her in the same events is seven-time Paralympic medallist Kare Adenegan, ensuring a strong British presence in the T34 category.

Sabrina Fortune, who claimed Paralympic gold in Paris, continues to impress, having set a new F20 shot put world record earlier this year at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

Six-time world champion Aled Davies is set to compete in the men’s F63 shot put, aiming to add yet another global title to his already remarkable career.

Meanwhile, Dan Pembroke, the reigning Paralympic and world champion in the F13 javelin and current world record holder, will be seeking to defend his crown.

Young talent Ben Sandilands, just 21 years old, returns to the international stage following his breakout performance in Paris. He will aim to retain his T20 1500m world title, continuing to rise in the sport.

Marcus Perrineau Daley, a silver medallist from Paris, has shown strong early-season form with a personal best in the T52 100m at Nottwil and will be targeting a top-three finish in Delhi.

Katie Jones, Head of Paralympic Performance at UK Athletics, said: "As we enter the first year of the LA 2028 Paralympic cycle, this selection marks a key milestone for our athletes competing at the World Para Athletics Championships in India. The seven athletes chosen in this first round bring a wealth of experience, and I am confident they will deliver world-class performances.

"With just over three months until the Championships begin, we will be supporting and engaging with all these athletes in their preparations, ensuring they are best equipped to compete at the highest level. Congratulations to all selected—this is just the beginning of an exciting journey to showcase the very best of British para athletics on the global stage."

The full squad announcement is scheduled for August.
