Statistician Peter Matthews’ assessment of form and achievements during 2016

These merit rankings of male British athletes are an assessment of form and achievements during the 2016 outdoor season by Peter Matthews from Athletics International.

The major factors by which the rankings are determined are win-loss record, performances in major meetings, and sequence of marks.

This year the major targets for top athletes were the Olympic Games or the European Championships and for younger athletes the World Junior Championships or the European Youth Championships.

Below you will find the top three in each men’s event. The top three in the women’s rankings can be found here, while international men’s and women’s rankings will be published online in the coming days. The full British top-12 list for every event (except in those events where there were insufficient British athletes producing adequate performances), including the details of athletes’ seasons, are featured in our December 15 bumper 112-page end-of-year stats special, which is available to buy and read digitally here.
